Island of Gozo

Said to be the island of joy (from the Castillian word for joy) and home of the nymph Calypso, who detained Odysseus for seven years, Gozo is the second island of the Maltese Archipelago.

Today, just like it was in the past, it goes on fascinating those who discover it for the first time. Here it seems as if time has stood still, or that it passes slowly among beautiful farmhouses, red sandy beaches, cliffs, heartbreakingly beautiful natural ‘windows’ in the yellow rocks, saltpans and domed churches; even fields and eco-farms. Here one can live in total harmony with nature, its rhythms, senses and the wellbeing that derives from it. In fact Gozo has recently been named “The Island of Joy” for the many opportunities of happiness it offers.

If you’re fond of diving, rock climbing, yoga, pilates, photography, creative writing, archeology, history or food and wine, or simply the “doing nothing” philosophy, Gozo can offer you a unique stay. Anytime you wish to visit Gozo – together with Malta it’s the island with the largest number of sunny days- you can find the ideal location to satisfy your deepest passions in an exceptional and special corner of the world.

94 per cent of Gozo visitors recommend the island as a holiday destination  and 82 per cent intend to come back in two years. Everybody describes it as a friendly, relaxing, green, pleasant and surprising place. Within 2020, it will be the first eco-oriented island in the Mediterranean Sea.

Gozo is full of of bays, gorges in the rocks and cliffs. The first ones can be red-sandy (Ramla l-Hamra and San Blas), white-sandy (Dahlet Qorrot) or pebbly (Hondoq ir-Rummien); the second ones cut the coastline in Xlendi, where the Phoenicians disembarked their goods, and in Mġarr Ix-Xini; the fjords in the cliffs are amazing (Id-Dwejra, Wied il-Ghasri, Ix-Xweinj, il Qbajjar, Ta Cenc…). All of these locations were the set of "by the sea" 2015 the new movie of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt.

In addition, the villages stand out for the yellow colour of their old stone houses and for the redish and domed churches, while the capital city, Victoria (but the gozitan still call it Rabat) has a wonderful and panoramic “mdina” or citadel, on the top of the hill.

With its 67 sq. kilometres (and 31.000 inhabitants), Gozo is separated from Malta by a narrow body of water that is only 5 kilometres voide. Day and night, the Gozo Channel ferries regularly connect the two islands in twenty minutes, from Ċirkewwa (Malta) to the little port of Mġarr (Gozo), still dominated by the impressive Fort of Chambray, built in 1749 by the Knights of Malta.

Choose to find the island of joy, get enchanted with the fascinating Gozo!
